When is New Year's Day?
New Year's Day is 1 January in the Gregorian calendar, the calendar used by most of the world for civil life. The new year begins at midnight local time, so it arrives first in Kiribati and Samoa (UTC+14) and last in American Samoa and Baker Island (UTC−11 and UTC−12), about 26 hours later.
Many cultures also celebrate their own new year on other dates: Lunar New Year in late January or February, Khmer, Thai and Lao New Year in mid-April, Nowruz on the March equinox, and Rosh Hashanah in September or October.
Making the most of the countdown
The last weeks of the year are a popular time to finish projects, use up vacation days and set goals for the next year. Use the business days calculator to see how many working days you have left, or the date calculator to plan milestones for the new year.
